Welcome, racers, to the Lucas Oil Superbike Challenge. The goal of Miller Motorsports Park (MMP) and the Utah Sport Bike Association (
) in promoting this event is to run a highly competitive, well-organized, exciting and safe event that will be enjoyed by racers and spectators alike. Herein we outline rules and regulations pertinent to the event. The racing will be governed by the rules of the Masters of the Mountains (MoM) race series, which is run by the
and MMP, with a few modifications. Information and regulations specific to the Lucas Oil Superbike Challenge are given below, along with a brief summary of MoM Rules. Further information should be obtained from the MoM Rulebook or by directly contacting the
at president@utahsba.com.
Entry costs $200 per class and includes practices and qualifying for the class, plus the class race if the racer successfully qualifies (see below for qualification rules). Entry also includes Saturday, Sunday and Monday general admission gate entry for the racer and one support personnel. Up to four additional crew passes may be purchased for $76 each.
Racers may register online at www.superbikechallenge.com. Entries for each class will be capped at 60 riders (of whom at most 40 will qualify, see below). Priority for entry may be given to prospective entrants based on 1) whether a rider holds an AMA Pro licenses and 2) the rider’s standing in their home club’s 2008 and/or 2009 season championships. Entries received by 6 pm April 30th will be reviewed and accepted racers will be announced on May 1st. Registration for each class will close when 60 racers have been accepted or on May 14th, whichever comes first.
In order to be eligible to enter, a racer must satisfy the following requirements: 1) be an AMA Member, 2) hold a current expert class or equivalent road racing license from a recognized club (including but not limited to CMRA, CCS, AHRMA, OMRRA, WMRRA, USGPRU,
, MRA, AFM, WSMC, WERA), 3) must have held an expert class license for at least one full year, and 4) must be at least 14 years of age. Alternatively, a racer may hold an AMA Pro Racing license (the license will satisfy all three requirements listed above), or may petition for inclusion due to special circumstances. Racers and all of their support personnel must sign
and AMA waivers of liability; for racers under the legal age, waivers must be signed by both parents or legal guardians.
Race classes are GTU and GTO, which essentially are middleweight and open classes that allow nearly unlimited modifications and have no homologation rules. Displacement and modification limits are given below.
All bikes must pass a technical inspection before entering the track, and must re-pass the inspection following a crash. Otherwise a bike need only be inspected once during the weekend. Racers entering under a club-level race license (e.g., MRA,
, WERA, etc.) must have a bike that meets
MoM technical and safety requirements (which are very similar to other clubs such as WERA). Racers that hold a current and valid AMA Pro License may race with a bike that meets AMA Pro Racing technical and safety requirements, although we strongly encourage them to prepare their bike to meet
MoM technical and safety requirements. Please see the MoM Rulebook for details on bike preparation. Number plates meeting
or AMA Pro Racing requirements are acceptable, although race direction may assign numbers to racers at their discretion (for example to prevent two racers from using the same number). All racers must have an functional AMB transponder on their bike any time they enter the track; they will be available for rent at a cost of $25 for the weekend.
All racers must wear standard safety gear including an FIM-approved helmet (Snell, BMI, ECE certified), full leathers, boots, gloves and back protector.
Race procedures will follow
Masters of the Mountains Rules, except where stated differently below. Select
standard rules are also summarized below. For full race procedure rules, see the
Masters of the Mountains Rulebook.
All racers must attend mandatory riders’ meetings.
Grid positions will be set by qualifying times. In the event that qualifying practice cannot be held, each racer’s best time from practice session two will be used. If practice session two is also cancelled, then times from practice session one will be used. Pole will be on the outside of the track. GTU and GTO races will be limited to 40 racers based on qualifying time. In addition, racers must set a qualifying time that is less than a maximum time to be eligible to race. For the GTU class, the maximum time will be 2:05.5 or 110% of the pole-setter’s time, which ever is greater (i.e., slower). For the GTO class, the maximum time will be 2:03.5 or 110% or the pole-setter’s time, which ever is greater (i.e., slower). Both classes will be limited to 40 starters maximum.
Please be aware that all events during the WSBK weekend at MMP must be run in a very punctual time-specific manner. Therefore, in the unlikely event that an incident significantly delays a Lucas Oil Superbike Challenge practice or race, it may be impossible to restart the practice or race. Barring such an incident, the following rules will apply. In the event of a red flag (race stoppage) with less than 2 laps completed, the race will be re-started using original grid positions. In the event of a red flag with more than 2 laps but less than 50% of the race distance completed, race direction will make every effort to re-start the race with racers in their on track position; however, it may be necessary to re-start the race using original grid positions due to time constraints. If possible, the remainder of the race distance will be run. If a race is red-flagged after more than 50% of the race distance has been completed by the leader, race direction may elect to call the race and assign the finishing order based on the on-track order at the end of the last fully completed lap prior to the red flag.
If a racer crashes, s/he may not re-enter the track or the race. The racer should remove themselves to a safe location at the direction of course workers.
Finish position will be determined by distance completed and order on the track. A racer must take the start at the green flag or while the race is in progress and complete at least 50% of the distance completed by the race winner to qualify for a finishing position and any awards or purse money.
Flags will be used as with other organizations. No passing under a waving yellow until the incident has been passed. In the event of a red flag, a racer must signal, slow and carefully return to the hot pits to await instructions.
Protests follow
Masters of the Mountains Rules. They must be made in writing within 30 minutes of the completion of the race and must include a $100 fee. They must include the rule and rule number from the MoM Rulebook, except for scoring protests. All decisions regarding safety and race procedures cannot be protested. All other decisions by race direction about race procedures and finishing order, including but not limited to use of flags, disqualification, designation of finishing order, and penalties are final.
